Strategies to Survive in the Current Shrimp Industry
Rizky Darmawan, CEO, Delta Marine Group
It’s no secret that the shrimp industry has had a downturn recently. With the prices going down to an uneconomical level and an ever-increasing push for a greener agenda, farmers need to find innovative ways to survive and maintain profitability. In this session, Rizky will share his strategies for addressing these problems while improving his operations sustainability. Increasing operation efficiency, polyculture, and waste processing are among the topics that will be addressed in his presentation.
A Novelty Ingredient at Scale: Corn Fermented Protein
Brandon Hanson, Export Manager, POET
As global aquafeed companies expand production to meet increasing demand, the supply of marine ingredients in the marketplace has been strained. The supply challenges have been further exacerbated by cancellations of fishing seasons and supply chain issues over the past year. Novel ingredients for aquafeed production tend to promise increased sustainability while meeting necessary nutrient requirements. However, these ingredients have often struggled to meet an economical scale of production, which makes them cost-prohibitive for use in commercial aquafeed formulations.
Over the past decade, the production of corn fermented protein (CFP) has been steadily increasing in the United States, but production growth has rapidly intensified over the past five years. In 2024, US production of CFP is expected to nearly match the US production of corn gluten meal (CGM) at 1.1 million tonnes per annum.
Recent changes in US climate policy have put strong incentives in place for renewable fuels and bioproducts producers to install carbon capture and sequestration systems (CCS). CCS systems take the carbon dioxide produced during corn fermentation and inject it safely underground. As the industry adopts this technology, bioprocessing outputs like CFP may become some of the least carbon intense ingredients on the global marketplace.
These important developments place CFP in a unique position of increasing supply and improving sustainability footprint. Leading global aquafeed companies have already began seeing the benefits of using CFP. However, these benefits are just scratching the surface of what is possible with optimising nutrition formulations allowing for decreased use of vegetable concentrates and marine ingredients.
