Beta Bugs Ltd., a leader in Black Soldier Fly (BSF) genetics, and FreezeM Cryogenetics Ltd, developer of the patented PauseM® suspended neonate technology, have entered a strategic partnership to combine BSF genetics with suspended neonate technology to deliver enhanced performance for commercial BSF producers across Europe. The collaboration aims to improve productivity, operational efficiency and production reliability in Black Soldier Fly farming.
Beta Bugs developed HiPer-Fly®, a selectively bred Black Soldier Fly strain, through more than 45 generations of genetic improvement. The company focuses its breeding programme on traits linked to productivity, including egg, larval and fly performance. Recent independent trials have also demonstrated the strain’s performance, according to the company.
FreezeM’s PauseM technology provides suspended BSF neonates as a standardised biological input. The system is designed to offer extended shelf life and high survival rates, addressing an important production challenge at the early stage of the insect lifecycle.
Under an agreement signed in July, the companies will establish a HiPer-Fly breeding population at FreezeM’s production facility in Germany. The facility operates a dedicated Black Soldier Fly breeding hub with partner Hermetia Baruth GmbH. The new colony will provide the foundation for producing HiPer-Fly®-PauseM® suspended neonates for commercial evaluation and test marketing with selected BSF producers.
The partners will conduct controlled and commercial trials during the second half of 2026. These trials will assess biological performance across the commercial production cycle, with a focus on consistency, productivity and yield. Full commercialisation is planned for 2027.
Dr Alan Tinch, CEO of Beta Bugs, said the partnership would give producers a more reliable starting point with neonates while allowing HiPer-Fly to reach its genetic potential for higher yields. FreezeM CEO, Yuval Gilad, said combining the two technologies could create a consistent and scalable route for supplying biological inputs to commercial producers.
The partnership comes as the BSF sector develops from experimental production towards larger-scale commercial operations. For petfood and feed manufacturers, improved consistency and productivity in insect production could support the wider availability of BSF-derived protein and other ingredients.
