Denmark–Ghana Partnership Launches Waste-to-Protein Facility

Ghana and Denmark have formalised a private-sector investment agreement to establish a waste-to-protein processing facility in Accra, marking one of the first tangible projects to emerge from the recently signed memorandum of understanding between the Embassy of Denmark, Ghana’s Ministry of Food and Agriculture and the 24 Hour Economy Secretariat on Agricultural and Agribusiness Cooperation.

The agreement, signed at the Embassy of Denmark in Accra on Wednesday, 4 March, brings together Ghanaian waste management company JSO Waste and Danish firms Insectum ApS and Michael Bundgaard Holding ApS. The facility will use black soldier fly larvae technology to convert organic waste into protein ingredients for petfood, animal feed and organic fertiliser. It will also be the first Insectum facility established on the African continent.

JSO Waste is a Ghana-based waste management company focused on sustainable waste handling and resource recovery. Insectum ApS is a Danish company specialising in insect-based bioconversion technology, while Michael Bundgaard Holding ApS is a Denmark-based investment firm involved in the development of sustainable industrial projects.

The project represents an initial investment of EU€2.5 million and will create the capacity to process 8000 tonnes of organic waste each year. Financing will be finalised with support from the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark (EIFO) and commercial lenders, with implementation expected to begin once final agreements are concluded.
