IQI Trusted Petfood Ingredients is working to develop sustainable petfood products through collaboration with its customers and suppliers. In partnership with Fiordo Austral, a leading producer of salmon products, IQI offers salmon meal, oil, and hydrolysates sourced from production on the Chilean coastline. Recently, the origin certification for salmon meal has been renewed, enabling pet food manufacturers to track the supply chain of their ingredients.
The origin verification of salmon meal is conducted through the ORIVO authenticity testing program, where all verification is carried out on the finished product. This process helps to provide petfood manufacturers with documented proof of sustainable sourcing. IQI and Fiordo Austral are also working to incorporate primary data for the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) of the products to further enhance transparency.
These products are made from fresh Chilean salmon, including ASC-certified salmon, which meets international sustainability standards.
Fiordo Austral, based in Chile, is the largest producer of salmon products, including meal, oil, and hydrolysates. IQI introduced Fiordo Austral’s products to the European market in 2018, followed by the North American market in 2021. To ensure product purity, Fiordo Austral works with ORIVO, a Norwegian company that specializes in origin certification for food, feed, and nutritional ingredients.
Salmon meal, oil, and hydrolysates are rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and essential nutrients. These ingredients are available in different specifications to meet the needs of various pet food formulations. Salmon meal has a protein content ranging from 62% to 68%, while salmon hydrolysate contains between 72% and 77% protein. Salmon oil typically includes 10-25% omega-3 fatty acids. These products are sourced from fresh Chilean salmon, ensuring both sustainability and quality.
