Latin American petfood delegation visits Kansas to evaluate US sorghum

The Kansas Grain Sorghum Commission, in partnership with the US Grains Council, IGP Institute at Kansas State University, and the United Sorghum Checkoff Program, hosted a trade delegation from Latin America focused on sourcing US sorghum for petfood production.

The visit aimed to highlight the use of US sorghum in petfood, as demand for alternative grains grows in international markets. The delegation included representatives from several Latin American countries exploring new ingredients for pet nutrition.

According to the hosting organisations, US sorghum is used in over 150 petfood products from 15 companies. Its gluten-free and non-GMO properties, along with dietary fibre, antioxidants, and essential minerals, have made it a popular ingredient in petfood formulations.

The program showcased sorghum’s potential to meet nutritional needs in the companion animal sector while expanding US grain export opportunities.
