Mars expands ‘Better Cities For Pets’ to add more pet-friendly spaces globally

Mars, Incorporated is broadening its ‘Better Cities for Pets’ initiative to promote pet-friendly spaces in cities worldwide. The initiative responds to a survey indicating that only 40% of urban pet owners consider their neighbourhoods accommodating for pets. The program is set to invest over $1 million and benefit 10 million people and pets by 2030.

The expanded effort includes collaborating with C40 Cities, a global network of mayors focused on climate action, to enhance access to green spaces that are friendly to pets and people. Initial focus cities include London, Los Angeles, São Paulo, Bengaluru, and Bangkok. Additionally, Mars is teaming up with Tripadvisor to increase the availability of pet-friendly destinations.

Since its launch in 2017, ‘Better Cities for Pets’ has emphasised the needs of pet parents in urban areas. “With the urban pet population set to rise by almost 10% by 2030, Mars is more committed than ever to improving city living for millions of pets and pet parents around the world,” said Ikdeep Singh, Global President of Mars Pet Nutrition. “Giving pet parents a voice in how our cities are designed for the future won’t just benefit our pets – it will contribute to healthier communities and a better planet for all.”

The initiative aims to create more resilient green spaces in cities. Mars and C40 Cities are launching the Urban Nature Playbook for People, Pets and the Planet, which offers practical advice for designing greener urban areas that boost biodiversity and community well-being. “This partnership with Mars will accelerate support to cities to build resilience and improve access to green space for people and their pets,” stated Mark Watts, Executive Director of C40 Cities.

Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, expressed support for the program, emphasising the importance of safe, green spaces for both people and their pets.

With 11% of global urban pet owners feeling restricted by their pets, Mars is also expanding its partnerships to encourage more pet-friendly businesses. This builds on the 5,000 new pet-friendly places listed on Tripadvisor last year.
