July 31, 2024 – The company saw a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in 2023. Mars has achieved a significant milestone in its sustainability efforts, as detailed in the 2023 Sustainable in a Generation Report. The company reported a record 8% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2023, doubling its total GHG reduction to 16% across its full value chain since 2015. This achievement comes alongside a 60% growth in business, reaching over $50 billion in annual sales.
Key Highlights:
- GHG Reduction: Mars has reduced absolute GHG emissions by 5.7 million metric tons, the equivalent of emissions from over 1.3 million gasoline-powered cars in a year. The company remains on track to achieve a 50% GHG reduction by 2030 and aims for net zero by 2050.
- Climate Smart Agriculture: With nearly 60% of its GHG footprint stemming from agriculture, Mars is investing in initiatives to implement climate-smart agriculture practices. These initiatives will encompass over 1 million acres globally by 2030, improving soil health and farm resilience.
- Farmer Support: Mars continues to support farmers through various programs. This includes a grower-centric program supporting 1,900 farmers across four U.S. states and Poland, partnerships with Royal Canin and Soil Capital aiding 250 farmers in France and Belgium, and the Next Generation Soil program in Mexico and Brazil, helping corn producers adapt to climate change.
Poul Weihrauch, CEO of Mars, highlighted the company’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions while growing the business. “We are delivering on our business strategy to continue growing while reducing our carbon emissions. We still have a long way to go, but we will continue to follow the science and show how a responsible business can both do well and do good.”
Mars recently announced the “Moov’ing Dairy Forward” plan, committing $47 million over three years to reduce the carbon footprint of its dairy supply chain in partnership with major dairy producers.
