Missouri company turns invasive fish into dog treats

Missouri Coast Fisheries, based in Farley, Missouri, has developed a method to harvest invasive silver carp from the Platte and Missouri rivers, converting the fish into products like pet treats and fertilizer.

The company’s first line of dog treats, Barley’s Premium Dog Treats, is now available at the Pet Stop in Shawnee, Kansas. The treats, made from silver carp, are named after co-founder Greg Trial’s dog, Barley. Silver carp is a species that has spread across 20 states, including Missouri.

Since its launch, Missouri Coast Fisheries has expanded quickly. The company purchased two additional boats and has plans for more products. They have secured a six-month extension with the Missouri Department of Conservation to continue their silver carp fishing efforts, with some federal support. A portion of proceeds from the dog treats will support local animal shelters, helping to find homes for pets during the holiday season

Co-founders Greg Trial and Jim Finke celebrated the product launch, noting that it was a major achievement and an opportunity to work with local businesses.

According to Dylan Breedlove from The Pet Stop, fish-based treats are good for dogs’ skin and coat health, especially during dry weather, as they help retain moisture. Silver carp are a growing concern in rivers across the US, including the Missouri, Mississippi, and Ohio rivers. The efforts of Missouri Coast Fisheries not only address the problem of invasive species but also offer a product line that benefit both animals and the local community.
