PFI Applauds Dr. Julie Callahan’s Confirmation as USTR Agricultural Negotiator

The Pet Food Institute (PFI) has welcomed the confirmation of Dr. Julie Callahan as Chief Agricultural Negotiator in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), citing her deep expertise in agricultural trade as a critical asset for the growing U.S. pet food sector.

As U.S. pet food exports continue to grow internationally, PFI, which represents businesses that manufacture the great majority of dog and cat food and treats in the country, stressed the significance of having robust international market access.
“PFI looks forward to working alongside Dr. Callahan to maintain strong international market access and support continued growth for exports of U.S. pet food, which is predominantly made with ingredients from American farms,” said Dana Brooks, president and CEO of PFI.
The necessity for seasoned leadership in agricultural trade negotiations is highlighted by the fact that U.S. pet food exports reached over 90 nations and exceeded $2.53 billion in 2024.

Through the Market Access Program (MAP) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, PFI has assisted in the growth of international markets for over thirty years. The organisation has been promoting American pet food in important international markets since 1993, emphasising the quality and safety of the products. Funded in part by USDA subsidies, PFI presently engages in marketing efforts in 11 markets across 20 nations as a MAP cooperator.
The U.S. pet food sector contributes significantly to domestic agriculture and rural economies in addition to exports. In order to support production, PFI member companies bought $13.2 billion worth of agricultural supplies in 2024 and produced pet food in 33 states. Over 9.8 million tonnes of food are produced annually by U.S. pet food manufacturers collectively, creating significant economic activity throughout the supply chain.

PFI expressed confidence that the U.S. pet food sector is well-positioned to increase its global footprint while continuing to support American farmers and agricultural communities in light of Dr. Callahan’s confirmation.
