UK Pet Food has launched a new campaign aimed at helping pet owners make informed decisions about pet nutrition. The “Love Them Madly, Feed Them Wisely” initiative seeks to simplify the language used in petfood labelling and educate pet owners about nutrition choices.
Recent research by UK Pet Food found that while 70% of pet owners believe commercially prepared food is better than homemade diets, 62% do not fully understand feeding guidelines. Additionally, 70% of owners are unclear about what by-products are, with 22% finding the term unappealing.
Nicole Paley, deputy CEO of UK Pet Food, explained that the campaign focuses on reducing the use of complex scientific terms to make pet food labels more accessible. “We want to ensure pet owners can make informed decisions with confidence,” Paley said.
The trade association offers a collection of nutrition fact sheets and will feature a range of educational resources, available to the public including new guides on “Understanding Pet Food Labeling,”, “The Benefits of Prepared Pet Food” and “Understanding Feeding Guidelines.” Recent updates address knowledge gaps identified in a recent survey. These materials are available to the public through UK Pet Food’s website.
To further engage with pet owners, UK Pet Food has partnered with social media personality Dr. Cat Henstridge, known as Cat the Vet. Dr. Henstridge will release a series of 1-2 minute videos covering key nutrition topics, such as food labelling, derivatives, and by-products. The videos will be shared on social media platforms and the UK Pet Food website.
