dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health has partnered with SustainCERT to combine environmental footprint measurement, independent verification and carbon registry capabilities for companies across agricultural supply chains.
Announced on 4 November, the partnership aims to help companies translate sustainability data into credible climate action by improving the reliability, transparency and verification of emissions data, particularly Scope 3 emissions.
Under the agreement, customers using dsm-firmenich’s Sustell platform will gain access to SustainCERT’s independent validation and verification services and its Carbon Management Platform (CMP). The platform will allow companies to register, attribute and manage verified and unverified emissions data across their supply chains.
Sustell is an ISO-certified animal protein footprinting platform that uses life cycle assessment (LCA) to measure environmental impacts across crop production, feed manufacturing, animal farming and processing.
For animal protein producers, processors, food companies and retailers, a significant proportion of their environmental footprints originates on the farm. It enables producers to calculate product-level environmental footprints using farm-specific primary data collected directly from producers, rather than relying solely on industry averages and generic datasets.
This approach is intended to help companies track progress towards Scope 3 emissions targets, including those validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), in line with the GHG Protocol Land Sector and Removals Standard.
Under the partnership, SustainCERT will verify emissions data before transferring it to the CMP. Its unitisation system is designed to reduce the risk of double counting and over-claiming when companies share emissions data across value chains.
Thomas Blackburn, VP of Business Development at SustainCERT, said, “By combining Sustell’s robust farm-level footprinting capabilities with SustainCERT’s verification expertise and Carbon Management Platform, we are helping companies build greater confidence in sustainability claims, improve transparency across supply chains and translate emissions data into credible climate action.”
Dr David Nickell, VP Sustainability & Business Solutions & Head of Sustell, commented, “This partnership helps close a critical gap between measurement and action. By combining trusted footprint measurement, independent verification and carbon registry capabilities, we are enabling organizations to confidently share emissions data across the value chain and accelerate progress toward their sustainability goals.”
For petfood manufacturers, the partnership offers a route to more consistent farm-level emissions data, supporting supply-chain reporting and sustainability assessments.
