Phytobiotics PetArom Beef P: Next-Generation Palatability Enhancement for Pet Food

In an increasingly competitive pet food market, nutritional balance alone isn’t enough — voluntary intake and sensory appeal are critical drivers of product success. Phytobiotics’ PetArom Beef P represents a new class of palatability enhancers developed to address both animal preference and human sensory expectations, elevating the eating experience for pets while maintaining a refined aroma profile for manufacturers and consumers alike.

Traditional palatability boosters like hydrolyzed animal proteins (“digests”) are effective at attracting pets due to intense meaty cues, but they can produce strong odours that are less desirable in production environments or at home. PetArom systems — including PetArom Beef P — act as palatant modulators and aroma harmonizers, enhancing sensory cues for dogs and cats while reducing off-notes perceived by humans.

Engineered with a characteristic beef-and-liver flavour profile, PetArom Beef P doesn’t just add appealing taste; it balances aroma, boosting voluntary intake without overwhelming production or feeding environments. At the core of its performance is advanced flavour chemistry: selected amino acids and small peptides serve as precursors in Maillard-type reactions during heat processing, generating rich, roasted meat notes that persist through both dry and wet formats. The product’s high thermal stability allows it to be incorporated at various stages — from co-extrusion at 125–160 °C to post-extrusion coating — without compromising sensory quality.

Phytobiotics conducted controlled palatability trials with adult dogs at a recognized research facility in Brazil, using paired “two-bowl” testing to measure spontaneous intake and first choice behaviour. Results demonstrated that PetArom Beef P can significantly improve diet acceptance not only on its own but also in synergy with digest-based formulations. When combined with a standard digest inclusion, the enhancer boosted diet preference markedly, outperforming control diets and underscoring the strategic value it offers pet food formulators.

A key outcome of these trials was that while digest remains the primary driver of intake, PetArom Beef P adds a meaningful palatability lift — increasing preference beyond digest alone and supporting a more engaging sensory experience. Furthermore, dose-response testing found that a standard inclusion level (20 g per 100 kg feed) offers cost-effective optimisation, with higher doses providing only marginal additional benefit.

For manufacturers, PetArom Beef P delivers several strategic advantages:

  • Enhanced voluntary intake, helping products compete more effectively on sensory appeal.
  • Synergistic performance with existing digest systems, enabling formulation refinement without overhaul.
  • Refined aroma profiles, improving the human handling experience and potentially broadening consumer appeal.
  • Flexibility across processing formats, from dry kibble to moist or semi-moist products.

In an era where pet owners increasingly demand both nutritional excellence and sensory satisfaction from pet food, PetArom Beef P delivers a scientifically grounded solution that bridges flavour science, sensory behaviour and practical manufacturing needs — turning balanced diets into genuinely irresistible feeding experiences.
