Biochem Celebrates 40 Years Of Growth

Biochem is celebrating its 40th anniversary, marking four decades of growth in the global animal nutrition sector. Founded in 1986 by Eckhard Thölke, the German feed additive specialist has developed science-based feeding concepts focused on sustainability and performance.

Operating under its ‘Feed Safety for Food Safety®’ philosophy, Biochem now supplies tailored solutions to more than 90 markets worldwide, supported by a global workforce of 400 employees.

Originally established as a regional retail business, the company has expanded into a global operation with 15 subsidiaries across four continents. Its growth has been driven by a focus on balancing environmental responsibility with economic performance. Recent developments include the opening of a new production plant and administrative complex at its headquarters in Lohne in 2022, as well as the acquisition of BASF’s global glycinate business in 2025.

Biochem continues to develop solutions aimed at improving nutrient utilisation, animal welfare and emission reduction. Products such as TechnoSpore® and BetaTrace® are designed to address challenges across livestock farming, petfood and aquaculture through feed-based approaches.

“Since 1986, we have relied on science-backed concepts that unite environmental responsibility and economic performance,” says Dr Alexander Grafe. “By combining scientific expertise with practical experience, we provide the best possible support to our partners worldwide.”

The company has also strengthened its supply chain capabilities through the acquisition of a 5600-square-metre logistics warehouse in Holdorf, supporting its long-term plans for the feed industry.
