The expansion of petfood formats is reshaping how production environments are designed and operated. While many facilities have traditionally focused on a single product category, shifting consumer preferences are driving manufacturers to support a broader mix of frozen raw, fresh refrigerated meals, freeze-dried products, supplements, treats and functional nutrition offerings. A facility that once specialised exclusively in raw production, for example, may now also need to accommodate fresh meal preparation, refrigerated storage and small-batch supplemental products within the same operational footprint.
This evolution is changing expectations across the industry. Equipment selection is no longer focused solely on processing efficiency for a single production line. Manufacturers increasingly require systems that can adapt to multiple product formats, varying temperature requirements and different packaging workflows without disrupting operational efficiency. At the same time, facilities must maintain consistency, food safety, and throughput while managing more complex production schedules and shorter shelf-life products.
As product diversification continues, flexibility in both facility layout and equipment integration has become increasingly important. The challenge is no longer simply selecting equipment capable of processing petfood products; it is designing production environments that allow those systems to work together efficiently while supporting evolving consumer demand.
Temperature-controlled processing and ingredient management
Fresh and raw petfood production places significantly different demands on processing environments compared to more shelf-stable formats. Band saws are becoming increasingly important as manufacturers expand into raw feeding products, fresh meal production and bone offerings. In many operations, they are used early in the production process to break down larger protein blocks into manageable cuts suitable for grinding, batching or portioning. This is particularly valuable in facilities producing raw patties, fresh refrigerated meals or customized protein blends where ingredient consistency directly impacts downstream processing.
Demand for bone pet products has also increased the importance of band saws within production environments. Recreational bones, raw feeding products and specialty treats often require precise cutting to maintain consistent sizing and presentation. Band saws allow operators to process larger bones and frozen proteins with greater control and repeatability than manual cutting methods, supporting both packaging efficiency and product consistency.
In layouts where fully enclosed refrigerated prep rooms are not practical, grouping refrigeration and handling functions within the same production zone can help maintain product integrity. Positioning roll-in or roll-thru refrigeration close to active workstations allows ingredients to move through trimming, batching, portioning and temporary holding without repeatedly leaving controlled conditions. This approach reduces unnecessary movement across the production floor while supporting cleaner workflows and improved efficiency.
Product flow, timing and shelf-life considerations
As fresh and minimally processed pet foods become more common, product flow management becomes increasingly important. Unlike dry kibble or shelf-stable products, refrigerated meals, raw blends and lightly cooked recipes often have narrower production windows and stricter handling requirements. These products frequently need to move quickly from preparation to packaging and then into refrigerated storage, while other formats such as baked treats or air-dried chews can remain staged for longer periods without the same level of concern.
When multiple product formats are handled within the same facility, managing how long products remain at each stage becomes a critical operational consideration. Delays between portioning, packaging or storage can impact product quality, consistency and shelf life. As a result, equipment selection and placement directly influence how effectively operators can maintain control over timing throughout production.
Refrigeration systems play an important role in stabilising these workflows. Units with consistent temperature control and strong recovery performance create reliable short-term holding points between production stages, particularly when production schedules fluctuate or batches vary in size.
Portioning accuracy and production consistency
Different petfood formats rarely follow the same portioning requirements. A pre-portioned fresh meal, a raw patty and a freeze-dried topper may all be produced within the same facility, but each requires different weight tolerances, ingredient ratios and labelling standards. Maintaining consistency across these variations depends heavily on how accurately products are portioned and verified throughout production.

Even small inconsistencies in weight or ingredient distribution can impact customer confidence, nutritional accuracy and regulatory compliance. Skid scales and shipping verification
Weighing requirements do not end once products are packaged. In larger production and distribution environments, skid scales play an important role in shipping verification and warehouse operations.
As finished products are palletised for storage or outbound shipment, skid scales provide accurate pallet weight confirmation prior to transportation. This helps facilities verify order accuracy, support freight compliance requirements and reduce the risk of shipping discrepancies.
Skid scales also create another valuable quality control checkpoint within the production process. Incomplete pallets, missing cases or overweight shipments can often be identified immediately through pallet weight verification, reducing the likelihood of rejected deliveries, freight adjustments or customer complaints.
Supporting long-term production flexibility

In practice, equipment and layout must work together. Positioning refrigeration at the point of use, integrating weighing systems directly into production workflows, and clearly separating temperature-controlled zones allows equipment to perform as intended while minimising unnecessary handling.
As petfood manufacturers continue expanding into fresh, frozen, freeze-dried and specialty nutrition categories, facilities that balance equipment selection with thoughtful production design will be better positioned to manage growing complexity without compromising performance, food safety or product quality.
