Protix sets new bar for Sustainable Feed

A recent peer review published in ‘ScienceDirect’ has confirmed the impressive sustainability credentials of Protix’s insect-based ingredients, validating their Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) data. The study emphasises the company’s low carbon, water, and land footprint, establishing a new standard for industrial-scale sustainable protein production.

The findings, based on data from Protix’s 24/7 commercial operation, show that its insect ingredients, like ProteinX, LipidX, and PureeX, offer significant environmental benefits over traditional feed and food ingredients. The peer-reviewed findings show that ProteinX premium insect meal lowers CO2 emissions by up to 89% when compared to soy protein concentrate and by 78% when compared to poultry meal. Compared to coconut oil, the company’s premium insect fat, LipidX, uses 100% less land. Protix’s fresh insect meat, PureeX, utilises 99.8% less water than poultry meat used in pet food.

These outcomes reinforce Protix’s position as a leader in the global insect ingredient sector for pet food, animal feed, and plant care. “We welcome these peer-reviewed results as independent confirmation of our capacity to significantly reduce environmental impact,” said Piotr Postepski, Chief Commercial Officer at Protix. “There’s still enormous potential to further lower the footprint of the black soldier fly, particularly through broader approval for using lower-grade feedstock.”

Protix‘s Bergen op Zoom facility provided the LCA results that were first released in 2024. Due to improved datasets and revisions to the energy mix, the peer-reviewed update demonstrates even better sustainability performance. Further comparisons highlight ProteinX’s adaptability and environmental advantage by showing that it reduces CO2 emissions by 20.4% compared to fishmeal and 52.6% compared to soy meal.

Protix’s verified data confirms the insect industry’s capacity to spearhead significant change, changing how the world sources protein while protecting natural resources, as sustainability pressures increase across the global food and feed industries.
