Petfood manufacturers could soon gain access to a new naturally derived blue colourant if the proposed regulatory amendment is approved. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that it has filed a colour additive petition seeking to amend its regulations to allow the use of jagua blue as a colour additive in petfoods at levels consistent with good manufacturing practices.
Jagua (genipin-glycine) blue is a water-soluble pigment produced from the unripe fruit of Genipa americana and is already authorised for use in several human food categories in the United States at levels consistent with good manufacturing practice. The colour additive petition was originally filed on 24 February 2026.
The petition was submitted by Ecoflora Cares, c/o Exponent, Inc., and proposes that the FDA revise its colour additive regulations to permit the safe use of jagua (genipin-glycine) blue in petfood formulations.
In accordance with section 721(d)(1) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (21 U.S.C. 379e(d)(1)), the FDA has formally given notice that it has filed the colour additive petition (CAP 6C0341). The submission was made by Ecoflora Cares, c/o Exponent, Inc., located at 1150 Connecticut Avenue NW, Suite 1100, Washington, DC 20036.
