The Italian packaging machinery sector has achieved a historic milestone, with turnover surpassing €10 billion for the first time, reaching €10.06 billion in 2024. This marks a 9% increase from the previous year, reflecting strong growth in both domestic and international markets.
In the domestic arena, turnover climbed by 5.2% to exceed €2 billion, with the food industry being the largest contributor, accounting for 36.8% of the market. The demand for packaging machinery is primarily driven by the food and beverage sectors, which together account for 56.1% of total sales.
The positive data emerged from the 13th National Statistical Survey conducted by the Mecs Research Centre, which analysed 619 companies employing over 40,500 people—a 6% increase from 2023.
Exports have played a significant role in the success, soaring by 10% to reach €8 billion, which constitutes 79.4% of the total turnover. UCIMA chair Riccardo Cavanna noted, “A wide-spread network extending to far-off markets, plus the value chain are two key assets that helped us deliver these results, despite custom duties and international tensions.”
Emilia-Romagna remains the heart of the industry, hosting 34.1% of the national enterprises and accounting for 62.1% of the overall turnover. The workforce has seen growth, with 2284 new hires contributing to the increase in employment.
As for the future, companies are hopeful. According to Mecs – UCIMA Research Centre, 37.5% of businesses anticipate an increase in turnover for 2025, while 45.8% expect stable sales. However, Cavanna cautioned, “The results are positive, but uncertainties and reduced investment momentum are causing concern.”
