Thailand continues to hold its position as the world’s fourth-largest exporter of petfood, tapping into a global market valued at over €280 billion (£240 billion). According to the Commerce Ministry’s Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO), Thailand’s petfood exports grew by 31.47% year-on-year in the first nine months of 2024, reaching 80.61 billion THB (€2.18 billion / £1.88 billion).
The largest share of exports came from dog and cat food, which accounted for 71.47 billion THB, a 39.11% increase compared to the same period last year. Other petfood exports totalled 9.14 billion THB, showing a decrease of 8.03% year-on-year.
The United States remains Thailand’s top export market for petfood, followed by Japan, Italy, Australia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Germany, the UK, Taiwan, and India. In 2023, Thailand held an 8.39% share of the global pet food market, ranking behind Germany (13.07%), the US (9.81%), and France (9.77%).
The growth of Thailand’s petfood exports is part of a broader boom in the global pet care market, which includes food, care products, and services. The market reached a value of €280 billion (£240 billion) in 2022, driven by the increasing trend of pet owners treating their animals as family members. Global Market Insights predicts that the pet care market will continue to expand at an annual rate of 7%, with projections to hit €550 billion (£475 billion) by 2032.
