Riceland and Hill’s Pet Nutrition launch sustainable rice farming program

Riceland Foods and Hill’s Pet Nutrition have launched a new program aimed at promoting sustainable rice farming practices. The initiative, part of Riceland’s Carbon Ready™ program, encourages Riceland farmer-members to adopt climate-smart practices, with the goal of reducing environmental impact.

The Riceland-Hill’s Pet Nutrition Sustainable Rice Program will help farmers overcome challenges in adopting eco-friendly farming techniques. The program also allows Hill’s Pet Nutrition to achieve Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions by supporting these practices. The partnership aligns with Hill’s goal to reduce its Scope 3 emissions by 42% by 2030.

Adam Shea, Vice President of Government Affairs & Sustainability at Riceland, highlighted the program’s importance in supporting farmers facing financial pressures. “Programs like this help farmers adopt sustainable practices without immediate financial risk,” Shea said. “By quantifying environmental impact, we help customers meet climate goals and support farmers.”

Arva Intelligence, a partner of Riceland, will measure the carbon reductions resulting from the sustainable farming practices. The partnership, established in 2022, supports the success of Riceland’s Carbon Ready™ Program, which provides incentives for sustainable farming practices.

Hill’s Pet Nutrition, which is working to reduce its carbon footprint, sees the program as an opportunity to lower emissions across its supply chain. “We are collaborating with suppliers like Riceland to support farmers and reduce emissions,” said Bas Tabak, Senior Director of Direct Procurement at Hill’s.

Riceland Foods, based in Arkansas and Missouri, is the largest U.S. rice miller and marketer, serving 5,500 farmers.
