Czech biotechnology company BeneMeat has published a scientific paper examining the safety of cultivated meat in the journal Physiological Research. The paper, ‘Shaping the Future Plate: Exploring the Safety Concerns of Cultivated and Conventional Meat Production,’ reviews current scientific knowledge on key safety considerations and identifies areas requiring further research.
Among other areas, the paper examines the microbiological safety of cultivated meat production, cell-line stability and immortalisation, genetic modifications, cultivation-media composition, allergens and nutritional profiles. It also considers how potential risks can be identified, controlled and assessed during development, production and downstream processing.
Petra Nevečeřalová, PhD, BeneMeat R&D biologist and lead author, said that “Addressing the safety of cultivated meat is essential to ensure consumer health, build market trust, and clear the regulatory hurdles required to scale a novel food technology.” She added that BeneMeat thoroughly addresses safety and combines literature reviews with analytical testing to assess safety.
BeneMeat said the publication aims to support evidence-based discussion around cultivated-meat safety and promote continued assessment and scientific transparency. It believes that ensuring the safety of technology should not be limited to meeting regulatory requirements. The company has been registered in the EU as a cultivated-meat producer for petfood since autumn 2023.
