Italy has reaffirmed its global leadership in packaging technology as Alberto Cirio, Managing Director of AROL S.p.A. and member of the UCIMA board of directors, has been unanimously appointed chairperson of ISO/TC 313 – Packaging Machinery.
The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) made the appointment, which was a big step forward for Italy’s ongoing importance in global standardisation. The committee focusses on creating international standards for packing technology, encompassing crucial elements like productivity, safety, and cleanliness. UNI (Italian Organisation for Standardisation) also plays a significant role in this committee.
Mr. Cirio replaces Andrea Malagoli, the former deputy chair of UCIMA and Managing Director of IMA, who oversaw the committee from its founding in 2018—the same year Italy established and won control of the ISO/TC 313 international secretariat. Under his direction, the committee brought together major producers of packaging technology to create consistent and progressive industry standards.

“It is a great honour to continue the work begun by Andrea Malagoli and to represent Italian manufacturing excellence within such an influential technical and strategic body,” said Cirio. “International standards are vital for enhancing company competitiveness, ensuring product quality, and fostering balanced global industry growth—values Italy is proud to champion.”
Cirio’s nomination highlights UCIMA’s crucial role in shaping international packaging standards and promoting Italian and European technical expertise on the world stage.
