New study highlights benefits of ADM’S postbiotic for dog oral health

A new clinical study published in the journal Animals has revealed that ADM’s postbiotic product, PRIOME® Oral Care, can significantly improve oral health in adult dogs. The study, which focused on the Lactiplantibacillus plantarum CECT 9161 strain, showed that this heat-treated postbiotic helps maintain a healthy oral microbiome and reduces dental plaque.

“Maintaining good oral hygiene in dogs is important to their overall wellness, and it’s a growing concern among pet owners, yet regular toothbrushing can be challenging,” said Dr. Sophie Nixon, Head of R&D Clinical Research for Pet & Animal Wellbeing at ADM. “Our research highlights the potential for innovative postbiotic solutions to help support canine oral care and represents a promising step forward in identifying more convenient approaches to supporting oral health.”

The research involved a randomised, blinded, placebo-controlled trial with 60 healthy adult dogs. After dental cleaning, the dogs were split into three groups and fed a dry kibble diet. One group received a placebo, while the others were given either a low or high dose of PRIOME® Oral Care for 57 days. The study assessed dental plaque, gum health, bad breath, and tartar throughout the trial.

In recent findings, it was observed that dogs given a high dose of the postbiotic experienced a notable 10% reduction in dental plaque accumulation between day 29 and day 57. Additionally, the low-dose group exhibited a trend toward decreased plaque levels when compared to the placebo group, indicating potential benefits even at lower dosages. Furthermore, an analysis of the oral microbiome suggested that the postbiotic plays a supportive role in promoting overall oral health, highlighting its efficacy in dental care for dogs.

“This study marks the first canine clinical trial to suggest the effects of PRIOME® Oral Care and how it can reduce dental plaque formation in dogs and support their oral microbiome,” stated Peter Jüsten, Global Vice President, R&D Health & Wellness at ADM. “This scientific publication is the culmination of many years of research and development work, spanning multiple ADM teams, sites and countries.”
