Since the UK is experiencing a rehoming crisis and cost-of-living crisis, there is a decline in people adopting animals and an increase in pet-owners giving up and rehoming their animals.
The partnership will see McAdams pet food suppliers provide a bag of dry food to every RSPCA adopter to take home with their rescue cat and dog from an RSPCA centre at no extra cost. The company has also pledged that with every McAdams cat or dog food purchased by a member of the public, they will donate to the RSPCA, and have set their minimum donation for the first year as UK £80,000.
The RSPCA are the UK’s largest animal welfare charity, and wanted to focus on animal nutrition with this partnership, maintaining shared values with McAdams in regards to ethical farming and traceability in the pet trade.
The Sussex-based company was launched in 2016, and founded by Neil McAdam. The ethos of the company was to support pets and farm animals alike, with ethically-sourced pet food suitable for sensitive digestive systems. Currently, 99 percent of pet foods use dried meats and meals that are untraceable to source and have unverified welfare. However, all of McAdams dry pet food is sourced from RSPCA-assured certified farms that are inspected regularly, and only contain fresh, free-range meats in their baked range.
The nutritional value of their pet food is also a key component to their business. Whilst most dry food is cooked quickly using extrusion (steam pressure), McAdams bake at a low temperature, which is ideal for pets with sensitive digestive systems. The recipes blend vegetables, fresh herbs and natural botanicals, including the New Zealand green lipped mussel to aid in healthy joints, and the Irish kelp, both of which provide great antioxidants to help prevent inflammatory issues in pets. Their products are only sold in specialist stores that have nutritional training, to provide nutritional advice to consumers specific pet needs.
The company also has a commitment to sustainability, currently holding a carbon neutral status thanks to their recyclable packaging (90 percent is completely recyclable, with an aim for that to become 100 percent by 2023) and funding of rainforest preservation projects. McAdams plans to be carbon negative by 2023.
