A recent clinical trial conducted by ADM has demonstrated that supplementing a cat’s diet with Bifidobacterium longum CECT 7347 (PRIOME® Gut Health) and Fibersol®-2 improves intestinal health, particularly during dietary transitions. The study, published in Animals, found that the combination of these ingredients helped maintain gastrointestinal health in adult cats before and after a diet change.
The trial, conducted in collaboration with China Agricultural University, involved 24 cats over a 28-day period at the Pet Nutrition Research Centre in Beijing, China. Cats were split into two groups: one received the supplement, while the other did not. Both groups were initially fed a lower protein diet for 14 days, after which they transitioned to a higher protein diet. The supplemented group showed significant improvements in markers of intestinal health, including reduced serum lipopolysaccharide (LPS) levels, increased secretary immunoglobulin A (sIgA), and enhanced microbiome diversity.
The study highlighted that Bifidobacterium longum CECT 7347 helps improve gut microbiota balance and strengthens the intestinal barrier. Fibersol®-2, a soluble dietary fibre, supports this by promoting beneficial bacteria and improving overall digestive health. These ingredients also provided other benefits such as better adaptation to high-protein diets, reduced body fat, and improved odour control.
