Dr Eric Altom has been named the recipient of the 2025 Friend of Pet Food Award by the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA). The award, presented on 28 January during AFIA’s annual Pet Food Conference in Atlanta, recognise individuals who have made significant contributions to the petfood industry.

Altom, who is the director of innovation for companion animals and technical nutritionist at Balchem Animal Nutrition and Health, was honoured for his dedication to mentoring students and young professionals. His work spans over 25 years, during which he has advanced pet nutrition research and product development. Altom is also known for his involvement in several industry events, such as the Pet Food Alliance, Auburn University’s Imaginarium Workshops, and Kansas State University’s Kibblecon.
The award was presented by Dr Charles Starkey and Dr Jessica Starkey at the International Production and Processing Expo. AFIA’s Director of Regulatory Affairs, Louise Calderwood, praised Altom’s industry impact, particularly his commitment to guiding the next generation of professionals.
Altom’s career includes degrees in animal science and nutrition from Tennessee Technological University, Clemson University, and Auburn University. He also received AFIA’s Member of the Year award in 2022. The Friend of Pet Food Award, launched in 2019, recognises individuals who have made substantial contributions to the petfood sector.
