The most common cancers and tumours in cats and dogs can vary depending on factors such as breed, age, and environmental exposure and dietary history. However, there are several types of cancer that are frequently diagnosed in our companion animals.
In dogs, mast cell tumours are one of the most common skin tumours. They can vary in appearance and behaviour, ranging from benign to highly malignant. Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system and can affect various organs and tissues in the body. It is one of the most common cancers in dogs and can manifest as swollen lymph nodes, lethargy, and weight. Osteosarcoma is a type of bone cancer that commonly affects large and giant dog breeds. It typically occurs in the long bones of the limbs and can cause lameness and swelling. Hemangiosarcoma is a cancer of the blood vessels and often affects the spleen, liver, or heart. It is highly aggressive and can lead to sudden collapse and internal bleeding.
In cats, similar to dogs, lymphoma is one of the most common cancers diagnosed. It can affect various organs, including the gastrointestinal tract, lymph nodes, and kidneys. Squamous cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer that often affects the ears, nose, and mouth of cats. It is commonly associated with sun exposure and can be locally invasive. Mammary gland tumours are frequently observed in unspayed female cats and can be benign or malignant. Spaying cats before their first heat cycle significantly reduces the risk of developing these tumours. Oral squamous cell carcinoma is a type of cancer that affects the mouth and tongue of cats. It can cause difficulty eating, drooling, and oral pain.

This area provides many opportunities for nutritional evaluation and development within the petfood industry and veterinary practitioner.
However, despite these advancements, there are still barriers in our understanding of how obesity and toxicity contribute to cancer development in dogs and cats. Further research is needed to elucidate the complex interactions between diet, genetics, environment, and cancer risk in our companion animals. Additionally, more comprehensive clinical trials are needed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of various dietary interventions in cancer prevention and wider treatments for pets.
In conclusion, while diet and nutrition alone cannot cure cancer in dogs and cats, they play essential roles in supporting overall health, immune function, and response to treatment. By incorporating anti-inflammatory foods, antioxidants, weight management strategies, and immune system support into their diets, pet owners can help mitigate the risk of cancer and improve the quality of life for their furry companions.
