Mars, Incorporated has launched new recyclable pouches for its WHISKAS cat food brand, replacing traditional multi-material packaging. This move is aimed at helping cat owners make more sustainable choices for their pets.
The newly introduced mono polypropylene packaging is designed to be recyclable and will initially be available with the WHISKAS Tasty Mix Country Collection 12 Pack in retailers across the UK and through German retailer, Rewe. This shift to a recyclable solution is part of Mars’ broader commitment to sustainable materials and reducing its environmental impact.
The new packaging type has successfully cut the carbon footprint by 46% by eliminating the previous multi-material pouches that were challenging for consumers to recycle due to their combination of plastics and aluminium. The innovative mono material is heat-resistant, enabling high-temperature sterilisation while remaining recyclable.
“We want to contribute to a circular economy where packaging material never becomes waste. The transition to mono-material pouches has required ground-breaking, innovative material science, and we will continue to drive innovation in packaging to help build the world we want tomorrow,” said Elisabetta Pierangelo, VP of R&D at Mars Pet Nutrition.
This initiative aligns with Mars‘ Sustainable in a Generation Plan, which focuses on eliminating unnecessary packaging, redesigning for circularity, and investing to close the loop.
