PFLM is Here. Are Your Labels Modern & Compliant?

The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) rolls out the Pet Food Label Modernization (PFLM) initiative compelling pet food manufacturers to prepare for significant changes to petfood labelling requirements. This effort aims to enhance consumer understanding and ensure compliance for all pet food products, including dietary supplements and treats.

Key changes include the nutrition facts box redesigned to resemble human food labelling, making nutritional information clearer. This format will include calorie distribution and detailed nutrient information per serving, facilitating better consumer choices.

Additionally, PFLM introduces standardized Intended Use Statements. The Intended Use Statements must provide essential information about the product by including the specific species it is meant for, such as dogs, cats, or gerbils. Additionally, the statements should indicate the life stage of the animals that the product is intended for, which could range from juvenile hamsters and puppies (specifically those under 70 pounds as adults) to adult cats. Furthermore, it is important to clearly outline the purpose of the food, whether it serves as a daily diet, a treat, or a food mixer, eliminating confusion among consumers.

The Ingredient Statement will also see changes, focusing on clarity in ingredient naming and allowing for a standardized format. Manufacturers will be required to present ingredients in a clear manner, with specific rules on naming conventions for meat and vitamins.

Handling and storage instructions, while still optional, must adhere to AAFCO’s new guidelines if included. This includes using standardized icons for any graphical representations of storage requirements.

Labels represent just one aspect of compliance for pet food and treat companies. Pet Food Compliance offers extensive support, including registration assistance, license renewals, packaging and label audits, and tonnage reporting. They also provide retail compliance help and consulting services focused on branding, analytics, and strategic planning, enabling businesses to meet regulatory standards and enhance their operations effectively.

As the deadline for compliance approaches, failing to update labels could result in products being removed from shelves. Pet Food Compliance encourages manufacturers to act quickly to ensure their labels are ready for the enforcement of AAFCO’s standards, allowing them to maintain good standing in the market.
